Info

PizzaExpress was developing a new Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) format, with digital screens playing a big part in creating the atmosphere and bringing the space to life. They would be used throughout the restaurant for food promotions, menu content and brand moments.

Behind the scenes

My Role

I supported the senior designer leading the project, working alongside a junior designer to create the motion content for the screens. Part of my role was also looking after the technical side, working out how the content needed to be supplied and making sure the animations met the screen requirements. The promotional animations and bulkhead animation were split between me and the junior designer.

Digital cube

I worked on the digital cube by myself. It was a new, dynamic feature for the restaurant fascia, built around an animated version of the PizzaExpress brand mark to bring out the “Express” in PizzaExpress. I wanted the motion to feel active and a little playful, so I played with repetition, scale and timing rather than using a passive loop. The background colour also changes throughout the day, moving between different tones for morning, dusk and evening.

It was used at both Finsbury Park and Earl’s Court, with the motion adapted for each location’s specific screen setup.
